✏️ How to Replace an Apple Mail Signature on macOS Using a Downloaded .mailsignature File

⚠️ Important:

Steps:

  1. Create a Temporary Signature in Apple Mail
    • Open Apple Mail.
    • Go to Mail > Preferences > Signatures.
    • Create a new signature and assign it to the desired email account.
    • Name it something easy to recognize (e.g., "TempSig").
    • Close Apple Mail completely — this is crucial before editing files.
  2. Locate Your Signature Folder
    • Open Finder.
    • Press Cmd + Shift + G and paste this path:
    • ~/Library/Mail/V10/MailData/Signatures/
      • The V10 refers to your version of Mail — there should only be one.
  3. Find the Most Recently Modified .mailsignature File
    • In the Signatures folder, switch to List View.
    • Sort by "Date Modified" by clicking the column header.
    • The file at the top of the list is the one you just created in Apple Mail.
      • Example file name:
        2F1E1234-A9B1-4DCC-B123-9E1ABCDEF123.mailsignature
  4. Copy the Contents from the Downloaded File
    • Open both the downloaded .mailsignature file and the recently created file.
    • Replace the entire contents of the file with the contents of the downloaded file.
  5. Lock the File to Prevent Overwriting
    • Save the changes.
    • Right-click the edited file and select "Get Info."
    • Check the "Locked" checkbox.
  6. Reopen Apple Mail and Test
    • Open Mail.
    • Start a new email.
    • Select your signature (e.g. "TempSig").
    • Confirm it displays the new, custom content.
